There are numerous services for exchanging files, but trust is hard to come by, especially if you can't afford to let your data fall into the wrong hands. This is where Rumpus comes in, with an excellent solution to this issue. It gives you the possibility of running your own FTP or web server, on which you and your co-workers can store and exchange files. The software places a vast range of configuration and customization options at your disposal and the best part is that you don't need any advanced knowledge or skills to create and manage your server.

Rumpus is free to try, without any noticeable restrictions. It is available for Windows and Mac OS X systems and it can be installed in just a few seconds. What's more, the software doesn't require any special tools or services. A working Internet connection is all you need.

Creating a server is exceptionally easy. When launched for the first time, Rumpus will take you through a few initial settings, which involve specifying a root directory, creating a user account and enabling the server itself, which is done already done by default. Once your server is up and running, you can access it with your account, on a web browser or with a FTP. Although the server is created on your private network, the software allows connections from outside the network and it provides step-by-step instructions on how to do it.

The software lets you control any aspect of your server, from its main administration panel. There is a lot to be said about the convenience of this panel. It displays a few basic statistics, like successful or failed logins and transfers, as well as the amount of downloaded and uploaded data. Additionally, you can bring up an events log, on a separate window. Furthermore, you can access various menus, with options for network and web configurations, user account control, FTP settings and even for visual customization.

Flexibility is definitely something you can expect from Rumpus. There are numerous options to be found in each menu, neatly organized on several tabs. Everything can be tweaked at a moment's notice, by simply clicking a few check boxes, selecting something in drop-down menus or making specifications in input fields. There is absolutely no coding involved.

The control Rumpus gives you over user accounts is also worth mentioning. Accounts can be created at a moment's notice and you can set up a wide range of permissions and restrictions for each of them. You can decide if a user can download, upload, read or delete data, restrict them to specific folders, limit their connections number, download and upload rate and much more.

You can definitely say, without a shadow of a doubt, that Rumpus doesn't leave anything to be desired when it comes to managing a file transfer server.

Pros

You can set up your own file transfer server in no time. The software gives you full control over your server's behavior, over user accounts and much more. All changes can be made on the fly, without writing a single line of code.

Cons

Some antivirus programs may block Rumpus when you generate a SFTP key file.
